How to Fix Google Messages Disconnections in Beeper
Learn how to fix Google Messages disconnecting issues in Beeper Plus by adjusting battery optimization, mobile data settings, and Do Not Disturb configurations on your Android device.
Your chat networks may become disconnected from time to time due to a few different reasons. If you've noticed that Google Messages keeps disconnecting from your Beeper app, we recommend checking a few things depending on the error that you see in Beeper. Here are the most common error we see for Google Messages disconnections:
Error 1:"Your Google Messages app is not responding. Open the Google Messages app on your phone, ensure messages send, and battery optimization is off. If needed, remove and re-add the connection."
The core problem for this error typically stems from your Google Messages app going offline when unused. On Android devices, this happens more often than you'd think, especially if your phone has aggressive battery or mobile data restrictions running in the background. Even though you're paying for Plus, these device-level settings can override your connection and cause disconnections.
Here's what you need to do to keep Google Messages properly connected:
-
Test the connection manually. Open your Google Messages app directly on your phone and ensure messages are sending properly. Then immediately check your Beeper connection to see if it remains stable. This manual test often helps keep your Google Messages app online and can reveal whether the issue persists.
-
Check your battery optimization settings. Android devices often restrict apps automatically to save battery life. You'll want to go into your Android Settings and look for Battery or Power Management options. Find Google Messages in the list of apps and make sure it's not being restricted. The exact menu name varies by phone manufacturer, but you're looking for anything that says "Battery Optimization," "Power Saving Mode," or "App Management." Remove Google Messages from any restricted or optimized list.
-
Verify your mobile data settings. Similar to battery restrictions, your phone might be limiting data usage for certain apps. Check your Android Settings for data usage controls and confirm that Google Messages isn't being throttled or restricted there either. You can typically see this in Settings > Apps > Beeper > Mobile data usage and background usage
- Check your Do Not Disturb settings. If you use Do Not Disturb on your device, it could be interfering with Google Messages notifications and connectivity. Go to Android Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > Apps. Look through the list and check whether Google Messages is allowed to interrupt during Do Not Disturb mode. If it's not, add it to the exceptions list.
If you've gone through all these steps and Google Messages still won't stay connected even with your Plus subscription, the issue may require additional investigation. We recommend submitting a bug report from Settings > Report a Problem (or Settings > About > Report a Problem) if using Beeper desktop.
Error 2: “No devices found. Make sure you've enabled account pairing in the Google Messages app on your phone.”
When this error comes up, it usually means that there are no devices linked to the Google Messages account that you logged in to. We recommend checking the following:
-
Confirm that you're logged in to the right Google Messages account. In your Google Messages app, click on your avatar on the top right to reveal which email address is logged in. Make sure this is the email address that you're using to connect Google Messages to Beeper.
- Make sure that Google Account pairing is selected. In Google Messages, go to your Settings > Device Pairing and make sure it's set to Google Account pairing rather than QR code pairing. Otherwise, Beeper will not be able to connect to your Google Messages account when you attempt to attach it.
Error 3: "Unpaired from Google Messages, please re-link the connection to continue using SMS/RCS".
This can sometimes be caused by either manually deleting Beeper from your Google Messages app's Device Pairing list, or switching to a new device as your Google Messages connection in Beeper would still be tied to the old device. When you see this error, we recommend checking that:
-
Beeper is still showing up as a linked device in Device Pairing. Open your Google Messages settings > Device Pairing. Make sure your device pairing method is still set to Google Account pairing and confirm that you have the following set up:
- Google Messages is set as your default SMS app
- RCS is enabled
- Battery usage, Mobile data, and Background usage are all set to 'Unrestricted' for Google Messages in your Android settings
- If you got a new phone or switched to a new device, remove Google Messages from Beeper and add it back in. This makes sure that the connection is tied to your new device rather than the old one, which can cause connection issues in Beeper.
